变质作用机制
变质作用是一个基本保持固体状态下的岩石转变过程，岩石是如何在这种状态下实现矿物成分、结构构造甚至化学成分变化的呢？这就是变质作用机制问题。与岩浆作用、沉积作用相比，变质作用机制复杂多样，主要包括变质结晶、变形和变质分异三类。此外，在高级变质中还可出现部分熔融，在埋藏变质中甚至可出现压实作用，它们主要分属于岩浆作用和沉积作用范畴，故不在此叙述。
（一）变质结晶作用（metamorphic crystallization）
岩石在变质条件下的结晶作用称为变质结晶作用，变质结晶的主要机制包括重结晶作用和交代作用。
1.重结晶作用（recrystallization）
重结晶作用指岩石在基本保持固体状态下的矿物重新组合和通过化学反应形成新矿物的过程。重结晶前后，岩石总化学成分（除H2O、CO2等挥发分外）保持不变。
一些学者（Raymond，2002）将上述过程进一步区分，仅把矿物重新组合，只涉及形状、大小、空间位置变化而无新矿物生成的过程称为重结晶，把新矿物生成过程称为新成结晶（neocrystallization）。新矿物生成是通过变质反应实现的，关于变质反应以后还要专门叙述。虽然新矿物生成必伴随原矿物消失，但仍有一些原矿物能在新条件下稳定而并不发生反应形成新矿物，因此，这种狭义的重结晶与新成结晶往往是相互伴随的。单纯的这种狭义重结晶的情况仅见于化学成分简单的岩石，如纯灰岩、纯白云岩、纯硅质岩之中。因此，绝大多数学者则将它们统称为重结晶。重结晶作用也可在成岩阶段发生，发生在变质条件下的重结晶称为变质重结晶。
与岩浆结晶类似，变质结晶作用也包括成核（nucleation）和生长（growth）两个步骤。但是，固态下成核多为在有成核剂存在下的非均匀成核。所谓成核剂可以是一个先成的固体颗粒界面或某一变形构造（如晶体中的扭折带）等。而固态下晶体生长受表面能驱使，通过粒度增大和均匀化、颗粒界面平直化（多边形化）而不断降低表面能，以达到表面能最低的结构稳定状态（图20－1）。在理想的单矿物岩石如图20－1所示的变燧石岩中，当达到最低颗粒界面能的情况时，相邻晶面之间的面间角约为120°。多矿物集合体情况复杂些，涉及化学平衡。如图20－2所示的含石英大理岩的晶体生长过程。在低温条件下，由于方解石（Cc）＋石英（Q）是稳定的，所以二者之间没有发生反应，它们构成一个矿物组合（mineralassemblage）或矿物共生（mineral paragenesis）。方解石（Cc）和石英（Q）独自生长，包括粒度变大，颗粒界面变平直，形成该条件下的平衡结构（图20－2a）。当温度升高时，一旦超越反应（图20－2d）：

的反应温度，Cc＋Q就变得不稳定。在粒度增大的同时，石英与方解石反应，形成硅灰石（Wo）反应边，在硅灰石集合体内有少量石英残留，由于反应不彻底，结构未达到平衡（图20－2b）；进一步发生反应，当反应完全后，石英消失，形成新的高温条件下达到平衡的稳定矿物组合Cc＋Wo，粒度也进一步增大，形成新的平衡结构（图20－2c）。
2.交代作用（metasomatism，replacement）
交代作用指固体岩石在化学活动性流体作用下通过组分带入带出而使岩石总化学成分（除H2O、CO2等挥发分外）和矿物成分发生变化的过程。岩石在交代过程中保持体积不变。
可以在系统中带入带出的组分称为活动组分（mobile components）。由于流体相在变质作用过程中广泛存在，所以是完全活动组分。通常的变质作用也会造成岩石的H2O、CO2和铁的价态变化，这时我们仍把岩石系统看做封闭系统，这样的变质作用从化学角度称为等化学变质作用（isochemical metamorphism）。只有当变质作用伴随交代作用，系统除H2O、CO2、O2等挥发分外，K+、Na+、Ca2＋、Mg2＋、Si4＋等金属阳离子也成为活动组分可带入带出时，才把岩石系统看做开放系统，这种使岩石总化学成分（除H2O、CO2等挥发分外）发生变化的变质作用称为异化学变质作用（allochemical metamorphism）。通常所指的交代作用多是异化学变质作用。
例如，超基性岩水化，碳酸盐化生成蛇纹岩、滑石菱镁岩的过程：

由于仅涉及H2O和CO2的带入，其他组分没有变化，所以不属于交代作用范畴，相应的反应为变质反应。但若伴随去硅、去镁或硅化作用（SiO2、MgO也为活动组分）：

这种蛇纹石化、菱镁矿化则属于交代作用范畴，相应的化学反应称为交代反应。
Маракущев（1993）区分了变质蛇纹岩化和交代蛇纹岩化两种蛇纹岩化过程。
流体在交代过程中起着物质搬运迁移的媒介和催化剂的双重作用，是交代作用不可缺少的重要因素，流体相中活动组分浓度或化学位梯度是交代作用的主要动力。此外，压力差也是组分迁移的驱动力。Коржинский（1957）把组分在压力差驱动下，借助溶液的流动，从压力高处向压力低处迁移的方式称为渗透（infiltration），把组分在浓度差驱动下，从浓度高处向浓度低处迁移的方式称为**（diffusion）。渗透主要发生在裂隙溶液中，借助溶液流动实现，**主要发生在粒间孔隙溶液中，通过矿物晶格或沿颗粒表面进行。在没有流体参与下，**作用也可在不同固体接触面附近进行，但规模很小。
交代作用也可在岩浆结晶、风化和成岩过程中发生。发生在变质条件下的交代作用称为变质交代作用。
（二）变形（deformation）
偏应力施加于岩石，当应变很小时，岩石显示弹性行为（elastic behavior）。这意味应变在应力施加时立即发生，应力撤销时，岩石立即恢复至原先未变形状态。而当应变增加到超过弹性极限时，岩石就会产生永久变形。此时视环境条件不同有不同的变形行为：在近地表低温低压和较高应变速率条件下，岩石显示脆性行为（brittle behavior），永久变形机制为脆性变形，表现为岩石沿裂缝破裂，产生碎裂和断裂。而在地下高温高压特别是当应变速率低时，岩石显示塑性行为（plastic behavior），岩石永久变形主要是由于塑性流动（plastic flow）而产生的，导致矿物畸变和褶皱而没有破裂（Miyashiro，1994）。由于大的围限压力会增加颗粒间摩擦阻力，以及无孔隙岩石内部破裂要求扩容（体积增大），所以脆性变形局限于近地表低压环境。然而，脆性与塑性之间并没有绝对界限。在二者过渡区，岩石变形行为既有脆性特征，又有塑性特征，永久变形由于碎裂流动（cataclastic flow）而产生。变形岩石宏观上整体保持连续性，显示塑性变形特征；而微观上则被许多裂隙分割，显示脆性变形特征。
地下较高温压条件下塑性流动导致的永久变形主要有晶内塑性变形（intracrystallineplastic deformation）和晶间塑性变形（intercrystalline plastic deformation）两种机制。
晶内塑性变形包括直线滑移（translation gliding）、双晶滑移（twin gliding）和单个晶体的扭折（kinking），它们与晶体位错（dislocation）移动相联合。直线滑移的特点是晶格滑移距离是结晶学基本单位的整数倍，滑移结果改变晶体形状但不改变晶格方位（图20－3b）。双晶滑移的特点是滑移距离是结晶学基本单位的分数，滑移结果产生机械双晶（图20－3c）。扭折则是由于粒内变形不均匀而在滑移中发生旋转，导致滑移面弯曲扭折形成的（图20－4），而位错则是晶体内原子排列不完整造成的线缺陷。从滑移的角度看，位错代表了已滑动部分与未滑动部分的分界线（图20－5）。

晶间塑性变形包括颗粒边界的滑移和**流动（diffusive flow）。由于处于较大应力下的颗粒边界区有较大的Gibbs内能，与处于较小应力的其他部位相比不稳定。因而化学迁移从晶体的较大应力边界区向其他部位迁移，并在那里产生晶体生长，这个过程称为**流动，它改变了晶体的形状（图20－6）。**流动通常有粒间流体相参加，通过粒间流体相的**流动称为压溶（pressure solution）（Miyashiro，1994）。

变形晶体有大量位错，储集了变形施加的应变能，因而不稳定，力图通过重结晶以消除应变能恢复到稳定的无应变状态。这种伴随变形而发生的重结晶称为动态重结晶（dynamicrecrystallization），它包括恢复和重结晶两个阶段。而无偏应力参与的重结晶作用称为静态重结晶（static recrystallization）。它们都属于重结晶范畴。动态重结晶初始阶段称为恢复（recovery），是使变形晶体降低应变能而回到未变形状态的过程。其结果是在变形晶体中产生大量细小（粒径一般小于0.02～0.03mm）的亚颗粒（subgrain）。恢复之后的重结晶是剩余应变能的消耗过程，以无应变新颗粒的发育和生长为特征。新颗粒首先从高应变区如变形颗粒界面、扭折带界面等处开始发育，通过亚颗粒的旋转及其边界迁移、消耗老颗粒而生长。重结晶颗粒比亚颗粒稍大但仍较细，粒径一般为0.02～0.07mm。颗粒形态大多为压扁拉长状，原始边界一般被破坏呈弯曲状、锯齿状或缝合线状，显示不稳定态。进一步重结晶则使颗粒粒度增大，边界趋于变直，呈矩形状而达稳定态。Raymond（2002）描述了在偏应力影响下的变质作用过程中单矿物岩石结构变化理想序列（图20－7）。

动态重结晶有两个明显结果，一是颗粒的细粒化，二是颗粒定向，形成优选方位（preferredorientation）。有两类优选方位：形态优选方位（dimensional preferred orientation）是非等轴颗粒近于平行排列，这种定向肉眼清楚可见，包括面理和线理，以后我们将详细描述；晶格优选方位（lattice preferred orientation）是光学轴或结晶学轴空间定向的结果，可出现在随机定向的颗粒集合体中，通常肉眼不可见，需要进行专门的费氏台研究或X射线研究（岩组学）。
（三）变质分异（metamorphic differentiation）
由上述可以看出，变质作用通常趋向于产生均一化岩石，亦即使其成分和机械性质变均匀。这是因为均一化可消除由成分差异导致的化学位梯度，使岩石具低自由能而最稳定。尽管理论上如此，但在变质岩中条带状或透镜状矿物集合体即成分层（compositional layering）非常普遍。在一些情况下，这些成分层可能是原生的沉积或火成层理，变质作用期间矿物定向生长、深熔脉体的顺层产出和火成岩脉的顺层侵入，均可使原生层理构造得到加强（Passchier et al.，1990）。但并非总是这样，成分层往往是变质分异的结果。所谓变质分异就是使原先均匀的岩石发育成分层的变质过程（Raymond，2002）。
从现有资料看，变质分异产生成分层的机理主要有下列三种解释。
（1）成分层代表**反应带。**可由化学上不相容的两种岩石之间的化学位梯度（浓度梯度）自发引起，也可由一个均匀岩石中由于温度梯度产生的粒间溶液中活动组分化学位梯度引起。Orville（1969）用化学上不相容岩石之间的**解释泥质变质岩与大理岩间的角闪岩层的形成。他还以实验证明在存在粒间流体和温度梯度及有充分时间进行**的情况下，原来均匀的由白云母、石英和钾长石组成的岩石，由于离子迁移而变得不均匀，冷的部分由白云母和石英组成，热的部分由钾长石组成（王仁民等，1989）。
（2）成分层的发育是构造重结晶的结果。它们或是先存构造带**殊相优先成核（preferential nucleation）的结果（Bramwell，1985），或是局部应力场（剪切）控制的物质溶解和再沉淀（**流动）的结果（Moler van der，1985）。
（3）成分层是强烈压扁（塑性变形）的结果。Passchier et al.（1990）用一系列图解（图20－8）表示了这一过程。说明在高级片麻岩区，无论原岩构造如何，经过递进变形，当变形很强烈时，都会形成相同的层状片麻岩。
