斑鰶为鲱形目鲱科斑鲧属动物，是小型浅海鱼类，长约20厘米。因鳃盖的后方有一块大黑绿斑而得名，又称刺儿鱼、古眼鱼。斑鰶体呈长卵圆形侧扁、头大，吻短钝，口略为亚端位、略向下倾斜，无齿。背鳍位于体中部前方、臀鳍起点于背鳍基底后方，尾鳍深叉。体背呈绿褐色，体侧下方和腹部呈银白色。
斑鰶在中国沿海均有分布，在国外分布于印度和太平洋。斑鰶生活于海湾河口等浅海区域，水深5至15米处。其适盐范围较广，既可在海水又可在咸淡水中生活，有时可进入淡水。斑鰶喜集群生活，属于暖水种、涧游性种类，以浮游生物和海底藻类为食，为杂食性动物。斑鰶1至2龄性成熟，雄鱼成熟早于雌鱼。产卵期4至6月份，产卵适宜水温14至17℃。斑鰶在海湾内产卵，最高寿命不超过6龄。
斑鰶为小型经济食用鱼类，是出口创汇鱼类品种；从生物量与密度上看，斑鰶以春夏两季为盛渔期，其经济价值一般。

体呈梭形，很侧扁，腹缘有锯齿状棱鳞。头中等大，侧扁而钝。吻稍钝。眼近于侧中位。脂眼睑较发达，均盖着眼的一半。眼间隔微凸。鼻孔小，距吻端较距眼前缘为近。口小，近于前位。口裂短，不达于眼。上颌稍长于下颌。前颌骨有缺凹。上颌骨向后伸达瞳孔前缘的下方。口无齿。舌宽。鳃盖骨后缘光滑。鳃孔大，向下开孔至瞳孔前缘的下方。假鳃发达。鳃耙很密且长，217+211。鳃盖膜不与峡部相连。鳃盖条6.肛门介于腹鳍起点和臀鳍最后鳍条末端的中间。
体被圆鳞，环心线细，横沟线1条。腹缘棱鳞18～20+14～16。胸鳍和腹鳍的基部有短的腋鳞。无侧线。
背鳍始点距吻端较距尾鳍基为近，最后鳍条延长为丝状，末端伸达尾柄中间。臀鳍条短，其基部长于背鳍基。胸鳍向后近于达到或达到背鳍始点的下方。腹鳍始于背鳍始点的后下方。尾鳍深叉形。
头后背和体背缘青绿色。体侧的上方有8～9行纵列的绿色小点。体侧下方和腹部为银色。吻部乳白色。鳃盖大部金**。鳃盖的后上方有一大块绿斑。背鳍和臀鳍呈淡**。胸鳍和尾鳍为**。腹鳍白色。背缘和臀鳍的后缘黑色。
幽门盲囊特别发达。胃呈沙囊状。肠很长，约为体长的1.7倍。腹膜黑色。椎骨49。
幼鱼
初孵仔鱼全长3.0～4.5毫米，仰浮于水面。孵后12～20小时仔鱼全长3.7～6.0毫米，卵黄大部分已被吸收，卵黄囊显著缩小，仔鱼变得细长并倒悬于水面下20～30厘米深处，体质弱的则沉卧于水底。孵后3天仔鱼全长4.1～6.2毫米，口初开，眼球出现黑色素，肠道明显可见。孵后4～5天，仔鱼全长5.0～6.6毫米，卵黄囊已消失，眼球晶体黑而发亮，体透明柔软细长，夜间仍倒悬浮于水之中层白天能作波浪形蛇样平体向前游动，此后进入后期仔鱼阶段开始摄食。
孵后9～14天，全长7.6～11.8毫米，背鳍尾鳍出现鳍条，能摄食卤虫无节幼体。孵后1个月左右，全长20～25毫米，进入稚鱼阶段，奇鳍和偶鳍鳍条均稳定不变，棱鳞出现，体侧黑色素增多使之成为不透明，体高显著增加使体型由细长变为长椭圆形而侧扁，游动姿态由原来的蛇样前游变为一般鱼类那样的常态游动。孵后35天全长达35毫米，仔鱼完成了变态进入了幼鱼阶段，作为种的分类学上的主要形态特征依据以及食性，均与成鱼基本相同。【2】
栖息环境
斑鰶为近海中上层鱼类，喜栖息于沿海港湾和河口，水深5～15米处。常结群行动，适盐范围较广，既可在海水又可在咸淡水中生活，有时可进入淡水中而不死。
生活习性
洄游
斑鰶属于暖水性浅海鱼类，喜结群游泳，一般不做长距离移动，平时栖息在内湾浅水区。性情急躁，离水易死，不能忍受水温低于6℃。在4月底，向湾外作产卵洄游，黄渤海水域4～6月间为产卵期。8月后由深水向浅水移动进行索饵洄游。10月以后，水温下降，游向黄海南部深水区越冬。每年3月离开越冬场，向西北方向洄游，5月中上旬到达产卵场，产卵后成鱼在近海摄食，幼鱼在港湾内摄食。南海与黄渤海不同，11月间即作产卵洄游，11月至翌年1月为产卵期。
食性
斑鰶以浮游生物为食，营养级级次较低。斑鰶的饵料成分有腹足类和瓣鳃类的浮游幼虫，桡足类中的纺缍蚤、镖蚤和猛水蚤，蟹类幼体，浮游植物中有月形藻、菱形藻、舟形藻、圆筛藻、曲舟藻、双缝藻和圆环藻等硅藻类，以及有孔虫和沙壳纤毛虫、角藻等。
分布范围
广泛分布于印度洋至太平洋。自印度洋北部沿岸，东至太平洋中部玻利尼西亚，北至中国、朝鲜半岛和日本列岛沿岸均有分布。在中国分布于渤海、黄海、东海和南海。
繁殖方式
雄鱼1龄、雌鱼2龄性成熟，多次分批产卵。产卵群体体长155～225毫米，体重50～135克。怀卵量1龄6.2万粒，2龄12.9万粒，3龄14.6万粒，4龄24.6万粒，随年龄和体长增长而增加。产卵场分布于有适量淡水流入的内湾或近海，水深7～9米，水温14～17℃，比重1.020左右，产卵季节北迟南早，黄海北部为4～6月，福建沿岸为2～4月。产卵时间一般在日落后或凌晨，届时亲鱼结群而导致海面会出现一片复瓦状波纹。卵浮性，球形，无黏性，透明无色，卵径1.09～1.62毫米，具单油球，径0.13～0.17毫米。卵黄龟裂深。水温15.5～18.0℃时受精卵经51～57小时孵化，仔鱼全部出膜。
保护现状
保护级别：列入《世界自然保护联盟濒危物种红色名录》（IUCN 2017年 ver 3.1）——无危（LC）。
主要价值
斑鰶是一种颇受欢迎的小型食用鱼，肉嫩、味鲜而多脂，具广盐性，食物链级次低，生长快，当年达商品鱼规格，在中国南方和北方的港塭养殖中占有一定地位。【2】一般多腌渍后出售，生鲜时可适合煎炸后食用，或制成鱼粉。
斑鰶鱼肉中水分、粗蛋白、脂肪、总灰分及非蛋白氮的含量分别为78.17%、17.09%（干基计87.27%）、3.83%、0.53%和0.10%，与其它4种体形较大的海水鱼鱼肉相比（干基计），斑鰶鱼肉粗蛋白含量接近鳕鱼和真鲷鱼、高于鲣鱼和鲱鱼，说明斑鰶鱼鱼肉蛋白质含量十分丰富，是值得重视的蛋白质资源；脂肪含量高于鳕鱼、真鲷鱼、鲣鱼和鲱鱼。
斑鰶鱼肉蛋白质含量高，含有18种氨基酸，且赖氨酸含量丰富，是一种值得重视的蛋白质资源；斑鰶鱼肉不适合制作鱼糜，但却是制作明胶、生物活性肽、功能食品基料、海鲜调味料的好原料。
