海狸有三道眼睑，外眼睑上下两道，还有一道透明的内眼睑，适合潜泳，也可防止被树木扎伤———它的视力不好。海狸的前肢有蹼，也有爪，爪上下分叉。海狸经常用它当木梳，把皮毛梳理光滑，像一个绅士一样，当然是视力不太好的绅士。
海狸过家庭生活。一个家庭一般由6只海狸组成，雌的、雄的和4只幼海狸。海狸是安静的，如果它们之间有了争执，必是海狸父母将幼海狸逐出，即“分窝”，一般两年就要分窝。当然，如果成年海狸知道幼海狸可能成为人们口中的美餐，并有“海龙玉树”这样的美名，定会搂着孩子痛哭，永远不会驱逐它们。
海狸出于本能喜欢筑坝，全家合力为之，用石块、树枝和淤泥筑成的水坝最长可达300米。挖淤泥时，海狸把河底的泥抱在胸前潜出，很辛苦但样子很可爱。当然，海狸的坝没什么特别的用处，搞不成水电站，但对人类也没有害处。可能它们在劳动中享受到了愉快，没事看看这条大坝，心里也很高兴。海狸的巢高于水面1米多，像湖心凉亭。巢顶有一间房子，是幼海狸取暖的地方，房子下面有4－6条隧道，通向水下。总之，海狸很巧，很温和，也很迂腐。
