这部Wicked音乐剧也翻译成女巫前传，它是根据《绿野仙踪》的故事重新编写的，对原著的剧情进行了颠覆，尤其女主角之一的西方恶女巫Elphaba其实是一个正直不阿的人。

Elphaba就是绿野仙踪里的西方坏女巫的母亲与人通奸，喝下了那人提供的绿色饮料，结果生下一个绿色的女孩，就是Elphaba。Elphaba不知情的父亲为了避免第二个孩子也有奇怪的肤色，就逼她的母亲在第二次**的时候吃了很多牛奶花，结果导致Elphaba的母亲难产死去，生下的Nessa就是绿野仙踪里的东方坏女巫又双腿残疾。
Elphaba念大学时，和美丽的金发Glinda就是绿野仙踪里的北方好女巫分到同一个寝室。Glinda是个广受欢迎、爱慕虚荣，但内心很善良的女孩。她们最后成为了好朋友。Glinda迷上了英俊的贵族青年Fiyero，并与他交往。大学里本来有位山羊教授，但因为是动物，所以后来遭到了OZ巫师的迫害。Elphaba和Fiyero合力从新派来的教授手中救出了一只被关在笼子里的小狮子，因此这个狮子长大以后也一直胆子很小。就是绿野仙踪里的胆小狮子这次救狮行动使Elphaba和Fiyeryo微妙的产生了一些火花。
OZ国魔法大学**Morrible看中了天赋异禀、天生就会使用魔法的Elphaba，所以开小灶给Elphaba亲自授课，后来又请她去翡翠城给OZ国的国王也就是OZ巫师帮忙。Elphaba邀请Glinda一起去。两个女孩到了OZ巫师那里，发现他并没有大家传颂的超能力。而是想利用Elphaba的咒语为自己的中央集权统治作坚实后盾。Elphaba试了一下咒语，结果把巫师手下的猴子都变出了蝙蝠翅膀。就是绿野仙踪里西方坏女巫的飞天猴子军巫师看到她魔力强大很开心。但是Elphaba觉得这是虐待动物，就拒绝了帮助巫师。结果巫师和**下全国通缉令抓她。她逃跑了。
Glinda出于虚荣当了OZ巫师的亲善大使，而Fiyero为了找到Elphaba就当了卫队长好到处搜寻她。
Elphaba回到家乡想找她的父亲寻求支援，因为她的父亲是OZ治下的munchkin的统治者。结果她发现因为当时国内都人人以她为耻，她父亲在悲愤中已经过世了。腿残的妹妹nessa现在是munchkin的统治者。大学时，她妹妹喜欢一个叫Boq的男生，而Boq喜欢的是Glinda，只是被Glinda要求去照顾Nessa的。而因为不知情的Elphaba用魔法把nessa的腿治好了，Boq就说nessa终于不需要他照顾了，就要离开去追glinda。
nessa暴怒，抢过elphaba的魔法书，胡乱念了个咒语，结果把Boq的心变没了。Elphaba为了补救，就把Boq变成了铁皮人。就是绿野仙踪里的没心的铁皮人
Elphaba去找OZ巫师，并与他达成协议留下来帮忙，前提是放掉巫师以前捉来为自己服务的那些飞天猴子。巫师同意了。但是当 elphaba看到曾经给她教课的山羊教授竟然被巫师的各种手段弄到无法说话了，就意识到了巫师根本没有他自己说的那种服务大众为了大家的快乐幸福的心，决定与巫师完全决裂。这时卫兵们在巫师的召唤下赶到。Fiyero作为卫队长支开了其他士兵，站到了Elphaba的一边，并要跟她一起逃跑。Glinda此时赶到，目睹了订婚男友的背叛，大受刺激。巫师用一个绿瓶子给她饮料让她喝，说可以忘忧。但是她没有喝。
Fiyero和Elphaba逃了。但是决心报复的Glinda出主意让巫师去抓Elphaba的妹妹Nessa，说这样她就会出现。于是**使法让桃乐丝的房子被龙卷风刮起来，砸向Nessa。就是绿野仙踪的片头Glinda本意只是想挟持Nessa，但**直接把Nessa砸死了。Elphaba出现在事故发生地，与Glinda争执打斗，巫师的卫兵包围了她。多亏Frieyo及时赶到，救了Elphaba，但Fiyero被捕并被穿在架子上抬走。Elphaba为了Fiyero能活下去，把他变成了稻草人。就是绿野仙踪里的没有脑子的稻草人在本剧中Elphaba之前常说Fiyero是个没有脑子空有外表的人
Elphaba抓住了桃乐丝，要她把穿走的她妹妹的鞋还给她，留作对妹妹的念想。这是Glinda出现在她的家里，她要Glinda为自己保守秘密，永远不要洗白自己的沉冤。因为人民只是需要一个让他们信仰和欢乐的女巫，这一点Glinda会做得很好，而自己就以恶人的名声消失是最好的了结这一切的方法。她把魔法书交给了Glinda，二人对唱了一曲For Good，歌颂友情感人至深。然后Elphaba让Glinda藏起来，自己和不知情的众人打斗，又假装被桃乐丝用一桶水泼化掉了。跟绿野仙踪的剧情结合起来了，只是是另一个角度
猴子递给Glinda一个Elphaba曾随身携带的她母亲留下的绿瓶子。Glinda突然明白了什么，把绿瓶子给了巫师。一直说自己是个旅人没有家庭的巫师痛哭流涕。Glinda让巫师自己坐热气球回去自己的国度永远离开OZ。然后Glinda负责起了Oz的事务，逮捕了Morrible**。OZ人都欢庆起来。稻草人和Elphaba也在人群中远远的看着Glinda安抚民众，努力扮演一个好女巫，然后他们默默的离开了。
