"et cetera"，同＂and so forth"，＂and so on"，or "and other things"差不多意思，同时也可以表示未列全的一类事物。这里强调，"et cetera"表示的是同类事物。例如：
你可以讲：＂We could use cupcakes, cookies, etc."或者"We could use cupcakes, cookies, and so on."表示他们可以使用任何甜点。
但不可以讲：＂Bring hamburger buns, paper plates, cupcakes, etc."因为句中列出来的并不是同一种类的东西，读者不会知道你所指的到底是哪一类。
