符号学这个中文词，是赵元任在1926年一篇题为“符号学大纲”的长文中提出来的，此文刊登于他自己参与创刊的上海《科学》杂志上。在这篇文章中他指出：“符号这东西是很老的了，但拿一切的符号当一种题目来研究它的种种性质跟用法的原则，这事情还没有人做过。”【4】 他的意思是不仅在中国没人做过，在世界上也没有人做过。虽然索绪尔已经在1913年日内瓦大学的课堂上提出了semiologie,皮尔斯的semioticd学说省钱没有达标，亦是30年代莫里斯进行系统介绍才广为认知。赵元任在此文中说，与他提出的“符号学”概念相近的词，可为symbolics、symbology或symbolology，可见，他的确是独立于索绪尔或皮尔斯提出这门学科，应当是符号学的独立提出者。
符号学主要学派有哪些
跟着导师学这个才一年，只能说非常生涩，并且能力有限，还没驾驭好，这个回答只能是对完全没有这方面知识的人作为参考，专业人士就不用看了，太粗糙。符号学有两个分支，一方面是哲学的，以反对萨特的存在主义而产生的：另一个方向则主要是从索绪尔语言学发展而来的，经由叶姆斯列夫和罗兰巴特的发展，确立了符号学的概念，这个分支觉得符号学属于语言学的范畴，学界并不认可。可以借巴特符号学里面的通用概念来说明一下，ERC，E就是指的表达层面，也就是索绪尔的所指，C是内容层面，即能指，R是指它们所构成的关系，罗兰巴特的符号学研究的就是这种关系，或者说是这个符号产生意义的过程。
