毕达哥拉斯学派盛行于公元前六世纪,他们都是些数学家,天文学家和物理学家,当时希腊哲学的主要对象还是自然现象,毕达哥拉斯学派以及稍后的赫拉克利特都主要是从自然科学观点去看美学问题的。在自然科学中当时哲学家们有一个普遍的企图,就是在自然界杂多现象之中,找出统摄一切的原则或原素。毕达哥拉斯学派大半都是数学家,便认为万物最基本的原素是数,数的原则统治着宇宙中一切现象。这样把事物的一种属性(数)加以绝对化,仿佛把它看成一种先于一切而独立存在的东西,这就是客观唯心主义的萌芽。这个基本观点也影响到毕达哥拉斯学派对于美的看法。
他们认为美就是和谐。他们首先从数学和声学的观点去研究音乐节奏的和谐,发见声音的质的差别(如长短,高低,轻重等)都是由发音体方面数量的差别所决定的。例如发音体(如琴弦)长,声音就长,震动速度快,声音就高,震动速度慢,声音就低。因此,音乐的基本原则在数量的关系,音乐节奏的和谐是由高低长短轻重各种不同的音调,按照一定数量上的比例所组成的。这派学者是用数的比例来表示不同音程的创始人,例如第八音程是1:2,第四音程是3:4,第五音程是2:3。
从音乐里数量关系的研究中,毕达哥拉斯学派找到了一个辩证的原则,这个原则由这派门徒波里克勒特在他的《论法规》里这样加以转述:
毕达哥拉斯学派说(柏拉图往往采用这派的话),音乐是对立因素的和谐的统一,把杂多导致统一,把不协调导致协调。

毕达哥拉斯学派把音乐中和谐的道理**到建筑,雕刻等其它艺术,探求什么样的数量比例才会产生美的效果,得出了一些经验性的规范。波里克勒特在前已提到的《论法规》里就记载了一些这样的规范。例如在欧洲有长久影响的“黄金分割”(最美的线形为长与宽成一定比例的长方形)就是这派发见的。他们也有时认为圆球形最美。这种偏重形式的探讨是后来美学里形式主义的萌芽。
这派学者还把数与和谐的原则应用于天文学的研究,因而形成所谓“诸天音乐”或“宇宙和谐”的概念,认为天上诸星体在遵照一定轨道运动之中,也产生一种和谐的音乐。苏联美学史家阿斯木斯在《古代思想家论艺术》的序论里评论这种概念说,“音乐和谐的概念原只是对一种艺术领域研究的结果,毕达哥拉斯学派把它**到全体宇宙中去……因此,连天文学即宇宙学在这派看来,也具有美学的性质”。他们把天体看成圆球形,认为这也是最美的形体。这里可注意的是毕达哥拉斯学派把整个自然界看作美学的对象,并不限于艺术。
毕达哥拉斯学派还注意到艺术对人的影响。他们提出两个带有“神秘色彩的看法,一个是“小宇宙”(人)类似“大宇宙”的看法(近似中国道家“小周天”的看法)。他们认为人体就像天体,都由数与和谐的原则统辖着。人有内在的和谐,碰到外在的和谐,“同声相应”,所以欣然契合。因此,人才能爱美和欣赏艺术。另一个看法是人体的内在和谐可以受到外在的和谐的影响。他们把这个概念应用到医学上去,得出类似中国医学里阴阳五行说的结论。不但在身体方面,就是在心理方面,内在和谐也可以受到外在和谐的影响。他们把音乐风格大体分为刚柔两种,不同的音乐风格可以在听众中引起相应的心情而引起性格的变化,例如听者性格偏柔,刚的乐调可以使他的心情由柔变刚。艺术可以改变人的性情和性格,所以产生教育的作用。
毕达哥拉斯学派的带有神秘主义色彩的客观唯心主义的和形式主义的美学思想对柏拉图,普洛丁的新柏拉图主义以及文艺复兴时代专心钻研形式技巧的艺术家们,都发生过深刻的影响。
