学校 (school)、学者(scholar)皆由同一字根(schole)发展而来。
school学校,这个词是从希腊语schole过来的,意思是闲暇。古希腊人认为从事政治和军事的人是辛苦的,而只有闲暇之人才有时间读书学习。
后来,先哲亚里士多德、柏拉图给青年讲课的地方被称为schole,这词转成拉丁语词school,后又被英语借用。和它同源的还有scholar学者,就是指闲来无事读书、做学术研究的人。还有College学院这个词,我们现在指综合大学下属的学院,或指独立的学院,词源是拉丁语collegium,col即“with”有一起的意思,lego即“choose”,所以我们可以理解为大学生是经过选拔才在这里学习的。col这词缀有一起的意思,collect收集也是从这里来的。
scholar是不是由苏格拉底的英文名演化而来的
苏格拉底的英文拼写法是Socrates,来自其古希腊文名字∑ωκρτη. 而scholar(学者)和school(学校,学派)则同出一源,与Socrates(苏格拉底)无关。
