　　school学校，这个词是从希腊语schole过来的，意思是闲暇。古希腊人认为从事政治和军事的人是辛苦的，而只有闲暇之人才有时间读书学习。

　　后来，先哲亚里士多德、柏拉图给青年讲课的地方被称为schole，这词转成拉丁语词school，后又被英语借用。和它同源的还有scholar学者，就是指闲来无事读书、做学术研究的人。还有College学院这个词，我们现在指综合大学下属的学院，或指独立的学院，词源是拉丁语collegium，col即“with”有一起的意思，lego即“choose”，所以我们可以理解为大学生是经过选拔才在这里学习的。col这词缀有一起的意思，collect收集也是从这里来的。

　　苏格拉底的英文拼写法是Socrates，来自其古希腊文名字∑ωκρτη. 而scholar（学者）和school（学校，学派）则同出一源，与Socrates（苏格拉底）无关。
