ABC是 26 个英文字母的前三个，英语开始成为文字大约是在公元六世纪盎格鲁－撒克逊时代。当时负责把当地人口头语言记录成文字的，是罗马天主教的传教士们。他们面临的问题是当时的英语（即古英语）共有超过40种不同的音位，然而他们手中只有23个罗马字母（当时还没有J,U,W），无法一一对应。于是他们实验了许多不同的方法，如增加字母、在字母上加变音符号、两个字母连写等等来对应不同的发音，慢慢形成了古英语的27个字母和一些拼写规则。
